The U.S. federal government remains partially shut down over the funding of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, a core promise of President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign.
While the federal government is not completely shut down, hundreds of thousands of federal employees are on unpaid leave. Some national parks are being hurt by the lack of government attention.
We at The Pacer do not agree with shutting the government down for the purposes of political strategy. There’s more at stake than border security.
A lot of people are going without pay, national parks are suffering and our nation is being held hostage. We want our government to compromise and negotiate like adults.
There needs to be a foreseeable end to this shutdown and it needs to be soon. The longer the government is shut down, even partially, the longer our country and its people will suffer.
The functionality of the government and the people under it is not a tool to be used for political gain. The American people are not pawns in a political chess game.
We hope to see a reopening of the government soon. We also hope that further negotiations between Trump and Congress become productive and beneficial to our country.
We believe in standing up for something that we believe in, but at some point, a compromise must be reached, especially when an entire country is in the balance. The Republican and Democratic parties both have their differences, but the fate of the people will depend upon how these politicians can work across party lines.
