The latest philosophy forum held on March 26 was presented by guest lecturer Dr. Randall Bush, a philosophy professor from Union University.
Bush’s lecture “God, Mortality and Beauty”, will also be the title of his new book that is to be released this fall.
Bush wanted to bring to light a lot of questions concerning ethics and aesthetics.
“When someone makes a decision, is it because it is pleasing to them or ethically sound?” Bush asked.
Bush also discussed libertarian freedom and how it makes deception and injustice possible.
“Deception thwarts creativity and produces as its fruit, injustice,” Bush said.
He concentrated on humans’ perceptions of things, and how having freedom explains the way people do or do not believe in God.
The reason Bush thinks people believe in different things, such as material objects, gods or God, is because of the freedom people are given. The majority of information discussed at the forum was open-ended questions that allowed the audience to think about what Bush was lecturing over.
Madelynn Crutchfield, a sophomore at UTM, explained that the content of his presentation left her feeling slightly overwhelmed, but it led her to think differently about the way we do things and why.
“The forum was very relatable and I am glad I could attend it because the information I heard changed my perspective on why we do certain things,” Crutchfield said.
Crutchfield has attended a few philosophy forums in the past because of extra credit, but says she will continue to attend if any catch her eye.
Philosophy forums are held every two weeks, are free to attend and occur 4-5 p.m. in Humanities Room 212.
