With the plethora of student organizations at UTM, every student has the opportunity to join an organization that aligns with their interests and/or major.
We at The Pacer strongly encourage students, regardless of classification, to join an organization and get involved on campus. A large part of getting the full college experience is getting involved on campus, meeting new people and making a name for yourself. This will help when making a resumé later in your career.
UTM has 140 Registered Student Organizations and many of those fall under different types of categories from social to academic, with many that fit somewhere in the middle. There are plenty of intramural sports leagues, major-specific organizations, fraternities, sororities, professional clubs and more.
One thing to remember is the importance of diversifying your involvement. Sticking to solely academic organizations will limit your social outreach just like sticking to social organizations can hinder your professional development.
An example of a well-rounded and involved student may be someone who is in an academic organization, such as a major-specific one, and in a social organization, like a fraternity or sorority. However, students aren’t limited to these options or combinations alone.
It’s funny, during your freshman year you always get told to be involved, and when you attend the annual Organization Fair you may feel overwhelmed by the number of things you want to be a part of, so eventually after joining every club imaginable and quitting over half, you haven’t really found your niche until your junior or sometimes senior year.
Though we believe that being involved and well rounded is important, above all, we want our peers to make sure they aren’t being spread too thin.
Making time for work, social activity, and most importantly, academics can be overwhelming. At the end of the day, we’re all in college to expand our minds and get a degree to further enrich our lives. But while we’re at it, why not try to have some fun as well?
