Summer Orientation And Registration, or SOAR, is a necessary step for all “baby” Skyhawks as they come to join the flock and learn what the nest is like.
UTM held its first SOAR for the 2016-2017 enrollment period on Saturday, April 23. This event, though primarily held in the University Center, includes many aspects of campus and allows new students the opportunity to go to their department’s building as well.
Students start the morning by checking in and going through a welcome ceremony. In the bag they are given during check in they have name tags, an informational booklet and a schedule. This shows which informational sessions are held in what room of the University Center and at which time they can attend.
These sessions range in variety for all aspects of UTM. “How to Get Involved,” Greek Life, Financial Aid, Meal Plans and Housing have all been offered as a choice for any of the four segments scheduled as concurrent session meeting times. This year’s SOAR staff worked hard to develop three new sessions to give students a better understanding of the full UTM Advantage. These three sessions included, “Transitioning to College Life,” Athletics and Academic Success.
Soon to be freshman also had to opportunity to receive their Skyhawk card, eat lunch in the cafeteria and hear a presentation on the First Year Initiative. After all of these things are said and done the student is taken to their department where they will go through advising and pick their classes for the fall.
According to the staff from the Bursar’s Office that was making Skyhawk cards, there were roughly 300 students at the first SOAR of the season. SOAR gives freshmen an opportunity to explore campus and get real information about what their life will be like on this next journey, it’s certainly an experience that they will remember throughout their years at UTM. The next SOAR dates are scheduled for June 3, June 17, and July 15.
