Coming off of a road loss to Belmont, the Skyhawks returned home to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Eastern Kentucky.
The Skyhawks (8-17, 2-7 OVC) came into the game on a five game losing streak and last in the Ohio Valley Conference West.
In the first set, UTM took an early lead over the Colonels and(13-13, 5-5 OVC) went on to win 25-16, but that would be the only set the Skyhawks claimed.
The first set was the only one that the Skyhawks had more blocks than EKU. UTM totaled five blocks to EKU’s zero in the first, but EKU out-blocked the Skyhawks 3-0, 2-1 and 4-2 over the final three.
EKU claimed the second set 25-14, with the help of 12 assist from Ashley Edmond.
The Colonels followed up their second set victory with a 24-17 win in the third over the Skyhawks.
In the fourth and final set, the two teams remained close early, but the Colonels slowly began to pull away. The Skyhawks would try to to rally, but EKU would win the set 25-20 to give them the match win.
This loss was the first time the Skyhawks have fell to EKU on their home court since 2005.
Chelsea Bowles, who is fifth in the OVC with 4.41 digs per set, finished the game with 5.75 digs per set and 23 total. Allie Whimpey, recorded a team-high 12 total kills and 14.5 points. Amanda Crask, who leads the team with 9.62 assist per set, averaged 9.25 assists per set and totaled a match-high 37. The team’s leader in blocks, Julia Devinney, totaled five blocks in the game, with three coming in the first set. Crask (15), Emily Keaton (14) and Colleen Larson (15) all finished the game with double-digit digs.
The Skyhawks will return to the court for their second straight home game on Oct. 26 when they take on the OVC leading Morehead State. Morehead State comes into game with a 17-6 overall record and is currently undefeated in OVC play. The game is set for 2 p.m.
