Dr. Carver Appointed to SCORE Steering Committee

In August, the State Collaborative for Reforming Education (SCORE) appointed Chancellor Keith Carver to the steering committee overseeing policy direction for their organization.

Founded in 2009 by former Senate Majority Leader, Bill Frist, SCORE is a non-profit and non-partisan organization that seeks to increase student success and close achievement gaps between Tennessee and other states, as well as between students within Tennessee’s K-12 schools.

The organization’s goal is to prepare all graduating high school seniors for post-secondary training or education by proposing reforms to the state’s educational system. As a member of the steering committee, Carver will be heavily involved in shaping SCORE’s priorities going forward.

When interviewed, Carver said he had been chosen for the position partly because he was a representative of a four-year college in a rural area, and underscored the importance of having both of these perspectives present on the committee. He further highlighted his experiences with education policy in our state as part of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission and in working with the state government in the past.

In regard to specific policy prescriptions, Carver stated that his primary focus was to look at the best practices for educational outcomes in Tennessee schools and work towards applying methods which yielded favorable results.

He stressed that his presence on the council would count as a powerful voice for UTM in shaping policy, saying, “It’s a real honor for UTM to be able to be at the table as it relates to helping guide and direct new policy and best practices for K-12 in terms of attainment and performance.”

When asked how his tenure on the committee would affect his chancellorship, Carver stated that his cooperation on a K-12 committee would allow him to better prepare guidance counselors and other University staff for the needs of the incoming freshmen, an invaluable task.

“I’m honored that UTM is getting to be a piece of this group,” Carver said.
