Do the Five

The world has become familiar with the words “social distancing” and “self-quarantine.”

Social distancing has us staying at least 6 feet from other people to lessen the chance of contracting COVID-19. This has caused many schools to suspend in-person classes and events to be cancelled to prevent the large gathering of groups.

Although some people are leery about practicing social distancing and self-quarantine, it is recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to help flatten the curve of COVID-19.

Along with social distancing and self-quarantining, it is also important to do the five:

First, wash your hands often. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that people wash their hands thoroughly for 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer is acceptable if soap is not available.

Secondly, do not touch your face. When your hands touch a surface, they can pick up a virus. The virus can enter your body through the nose, eyes or mouth. If you touch your face, you risk transferring the virus into your body.

Third, cough and sneeze into your elbow. COVID-19 is a virus that spreads through respiratory droplets. Coughing and sneezing into your elbow will help reduce germs that go onto objects or people. It would also be wise to clean surfaces, that could be contaminated, often – especially highly touched surfaces such as counter-tops, doorknobs, appliances and shopping carts.

Fourth, keep a safe distance. This is where social distancing comes in. You should keep a distance of six feet from others while out in public. Physical distancing will help reduce the spread of the virus.

Lastly, stay home if you can. Self-quarantining can keep you and other people safe. The virus spreads mainly from person-to-person contact according to the CDC. Self-quarantining can help keep you from coming into contact with the virus.

It is important to try and follow these five steps to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The virus affects everyone differently, so it is important to protect yourself and others. Stay safe.
