UTM’s Department of English and Modern Foreign Language held their annual picnic on October 9 at Weldon Park in downtown Martin.
Each fall, the department holds a picnic as a means to bring together students of all classes and professors. By reaching out to everyone in the department, it offers a way for all those involved to meet and get to know who they will be spending their time with for the academic year.
As the picnic began, professors and students gathered to enjoy and celebrate the halfway point of the semester. The picnic lasted from 5:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. 75 students and faculty members were present at the picnic.
Food for the picnic was provided by Southern Red’s Barbeque of Pilot Oak, KY.
“It was a wonderful evening to eat barbecue and listen to rock and roll,” said Dr. Chris Hill, associate professor of English.
Entertainment for the evening was provided by the House Band, a group consisting of professors from the Humanities. Dr. David Coffey, professor of history and chairman of the Department of History and Philosophy, sang for the band, as well as played harmonica and guitar. Dr. Chris Brown (drummer) and Dr. Jim Fieser (lead guitarist) are professors of philosophy, while Dr. David Carithers (rhythm guitarist) is an associate professor of English. Ken Robinson, Director of Engineering for WLJT, played keyboard, and Micah Barnes Electronics and Communications Specialist for the Department of Music, played bass.
Dr. John Glass, associate professor of English, believes the event was a success.
“It’s an event that has good food, good music and good people,” said Glass. “It keeps getting better.”
