A night of poetry and neo soul music is what the Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta had in store for UTM on Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, an event for all the soul lovers called “Soul Night.”
This event was full of soul from the moment the students hit the door. Selections of soul music were playing while waiting for the show to begin and the growing audience was entertained and dancing until the lights went down.
Host Symphony Johnson, a UTM graduate, kicked off the show with an entrance to Kendrick Lamar’s “Don’t Kill My Vibe.” Johnson said that the Delta Sigma Theta chapter wanted a way to get the campus involved.
“We just want to get the campus involved, as well as letting them know we are here and we can be fun,” Johnson said.
After the host’s introduction, the show continued with a poem read by the host and written by a member of the Eta Xi chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Shericka Norris.
This night was full of poets. Corey Brooks, a member of Alpha Phi Alpha performed two pieces, one called “Gibberish” in which he made a tribute to 9/11, and his other piece was called “Decisions,” a powerful piece about fatherhood.
Another poet who wowed the crowd was a UTM student who calls herself Menace to Poetry, also known as Kavonna Cooper. Her performance was met with roaring applause and finger snaps as she left the stage.
The night would not have been complete without a bit of dancing. UTM Dance major and a member of the Collegiate Dance Association Ashleigh Morrow performed a passionate dance piece to “Fire We Make” by Alicia Keys featuring Maxwell. Also UTM Dance and Criminal Justice major Leslie “Kar” Howard performed a heart-felt dance piece to “Ordinary People” by John Legend.
Also during the show, the crowd got a nice surprise when UTM student Angelica Gunn did an imitation of Erykah Badu singing “Tyrone.”
Overall, the night was full of soul and more soul. After the last act, the host thanked everyone and announced that on Sept. 17 at 7:13 p.m. there would be an event called Showtime at the Apollo, which will cost $3 to attend.
