On Sept. 4 Delta Sigma Theta presented their first Celebration of Gospel in the Watkins Auditorium.
A night full of heart-felt singing and spiritual companionship began with a beautiful solo by Chapter President Chasity Frazier and an introduction of the host, UTM alumnus and Kappa Alpha Psi member, Bryce Holmes. After thanking the Deltas for asking him to host, Holmes introduced Minister Natalie Boyd, who started the program with prayer.
Audience members were all smiles when the children of the Delta Angel Choir performed their two selections. One selection was performed with Heavenly Mack, who had delivered a powerful message prior to the children’s performance.
Senior Arts major Garrick Terrell Douglas provided the only male solo selection performed during the program.
The Celebration would not have seemed complete without at least one or two praise dances. Sophomore Education major, Marsalett Dockery, performed a spell-bounding praise dance to “Before the Throne” by Shekinah Glory Ministry and senior Sociology major, Tanika Davis, performed a beautiful praise dance to “Your Grace and Mercy” by Marvin Winans.
The crowd was awed by a group of young women called KL2 as they performed a self-arranged gospel medley of familiar gospel tunes. Critically acclaimed songstress Tami Floyd, had the crowd on their feet as she performed three powerful selections that ended with the room giving a roaring applause.
Holmes concluded the evening with many thank-yous. The Deltas had previously held an event where they gave out free school supplies to students on the UTM campus.
Eta Xi Chapter President Chasity Frazier announced the plan to continue the Celebration of Gospel in the future, as well as other service to the community.
“Delta Sigma Theta is about serving our community, representing what we believe in and sharing those beliefs,” Frazier said.
