Warner Bros. studio announced that they will be reteaming with Steven Spielberg to develop DC Comic’s Blackhawk as a potential directing vehicle for Spielberg.
The film will also have Spielberg work with frequent collaborator David Koepp, writer of Jurassic Park and Spider-Man. The acclaimed director will also produce the film with his production company Amblin Entertainment. This will be his first film about any DC Comics intellectual property. When speaking about the collaboration on the film, Spielberg stated that, “It was wonderful working with the team at Warner Bros. to bring Ready Player One to the screen. They bring a blend of passion and professionalism to everything they do and have a tremendous history in this genre. I am excited to reunite with them on Blackhawk.”
Blackhawk, or Janos Prohaska, first appeared in DC Comics in 1941. He led a team of diverse ace fighter pilots during World War II. Given that this film is set during World War II, this film seems to be right up Spielberg’s alley, with films such as Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. This film will also allow the director to blend his thematic historical drama ideas with his blockbuster sensibilities.
In addition to working with Koepp, he will be working with Kristie Macosko Krieger, producer of The Post and Bridge of Spies, as well as Sue Kroll serving as executive producer with her new production company Kroll & Co. Entertainment.
However, this will not be Spielberg’s next film. Currently, he will be working on the fifth installment of the Indiana Jones franchise, which is expected to start filming in 2019, and the West Side Story remake.
Blackhawk will join the long list of films Warner Bros. expects to make under the DC Films brand, along with a one-off Joker film, a new Superman movie, Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the recently announced Birds of Prey with Margot Robbie producing and starring in as Harley Quinn.
