Davis wins 9th annual Miss Soybean title

This Saturday, Aug. 31, the 9th annual Miss Soybean Pageant was held in the Student Life Center. The pageants began at 10 a.m. and ended at 5 p.m.

The Miss Soybean emcee was UTM’s very own Mary Lynn Williams. The judges were Taren Hatcher, Mimi Dubois and Jantzen Kelly. This year, the volunteer group that gave their time to the pageant was the Westview Interact Club, which is the local high school version of the Rotary Club.

This has been Hollie Holt’s ninth year as the director of the pageant. She started the pageants in 2005 after going to Mayor Randy Brundige with the idea after asking if she could start a festival pageant.

“I love the Soybean Festival and the city of Martin and volunteering to be the pageant director is how I give back to my community,” Holt said.

Her vision is to have the pageant queens involved in the week-long festival by attending events and then by representing the festival throughout the year by participating in other parades. Each year, the pageant has between 90 and 120 contestants and 250 to 350 audience members. It is an event that is known to kick-start the Soybean Festival week.
