Jonathan Kirkland is a junior Communications major and Theatre minor from Martin.
Kirkland’s interest in theater began when his parents let him watch The Phantom of the Opera. He auditioned for plays in elementary school and participated in small church plays.
His love for theater really took flight after he watched West Side Story.
“I obsessed over the Broadway soundtrack and discovered a whole new world of theater because of it,” Kirkland said.
Kirkland has been a part of many community and church productions, including his latest role in the Vanguard Theatre’s production of The Crucible.
“Theater is a mirror of who we are as people, not just who we would like to be,” Kirkland said. “Some stories can hurt and can sometimes even break people, but that’s the uniqueness of theater as an art form.”
After graduation, Kirkland plans to pursue theatrical publicity or public relations.
