UTM’s Office of Career Planning and Development (CPAD) is hosting Career Readiness Week Sept. 17-21.
The events for the week will take place in the UC and will include workshops and snacks.
Renard Miles, the interim director of CPAD and the overseer of the event, said that his office is not only involved in resume-building, but in all aspects of career and major discernment and in helping students obtain internships and associated stipends to assist with living expenses. The Career Readiness Week is an opportunity to broaden those services out to the student body, especially underclassmen.
“In my experience, it’s very beneficial for students. I think that the hardest part is conveying to students that now is the time to start working on this,” Miles said.
Miles added, “I think a lot of times students wait until their junior or senior year to start utilizing our services,” leaving them behind the curve in terms of career development.
There are events every day during the week. The events are geared towards both entry-level and more complex career skills. Some examples include a workshop on networking and LinkedIn, job searching strategies, salary negotiation, a resume review, practice interviews and panel discussions on building a gig and issues of career equity among minority job-seekers. On Friday, Sept. 21, the event will offer a chance to have professional headshots taken for free.
While college is for more than just finding a job, everyone admits that attaining gainful employment is a large part of the college experience.
Attendance for the event is free and open to all UTM students as well as food and drinks, although you must register for some events and seating is first-come, first serve.
