The month of April has been established as Autism Awareness Month and will see many individuals, groups, and businesses “going blue” in support of the campaign.
Autism Speaks, the world’s largest advocacy group for autism, has had April 2 set aside by the United Nations as the World Autism Awareness Day. As such, it is encouraging all to show support by wearing blue as part of its Light It Up Blue campaign.
As of April 1, over 13,000 buildings and landmarks worldwide have agreed to show their participation in the movement. Ranging from the Great Pyramid of Giza and London’s Trafalgar Square to the recently finished One World Trade Center in New York City, iconic places will truly show a global support for this cause. In total, over 130 countries will be showcasing their support for autism awareness and education.
In addition to the great displays that these landmarks are sure to be, Autism Speaks is also encouraging as many people as possible to show individual support by wearing blue on April 2. The group hopes that a strong beginning to the month of April will continue furthering their cause of continually increasing awareness and support to this growing public health concern. In addition to wearing blue on April 2, individuals are encouraged to “light up” the outside of their homes with blue lights and decorations.
