Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and for most of us this is a time to be family and friends. For many of us this also means indulging in our favorite foods and desserts, many of which are not the healthiest choices. As difficult as it may seem, it is possible to indulge in the abundance of holiday favorites and festivities and remain healthy all at the same time.
Even though we tend to associate many of the same foods with Thanksgiving, we all tend to have different ways of preparing these dishes. With that being said, it tends to be difficult to count calories with Thanksgiving meals that are generally homemade. That doesn’t mean that it is impossible to incorporate some healthy habits into the general gluttonous holiday. I would like to offer a few dos and don’ts to keep you on track this holiday season.
Do eat the turkey. Experts agree that turkey is generally always a good choice. Try to choose white meat pieces like the breast meat.
Don’t assume that all vegetables are created equal. Just because your favorite side dishes may include a vegetable doesn’t mean that they aren’t loaded down with calories. Many of our signature Thanksgiving casseroles tend to be loaded down with cheeses, sauces and plenty of other calorie inducers.
Don’t load your plate. This one is self-explanatory. Moderation is key.
Do enjoy your favorite dish. Once again just do so in moderation.
Do enjoy your holiday traditions.
Don’t feel bad about enjoying your holiday meal.
Thanksgiving is a time of tradition and that tradition includes food. It’s perfectly acceptable to take a day to indulge in the foods that remind you of what family is truly about. You should never feel bad about that.
Make memories, share laughs, let loose and don’t worry so much about what’s on your plate.
