UT Martin’s most fun, outgoing and challenging class you never knew you needed was Disc Golf with Chris Brinkley, which I took in 2019.
The city of Martin has a disc golf course that can be very difficult for beginners and is located about a mile from the university. The class was difficult but lots and lots of fun. I really enjoyed it and it is by far my favorite class I have taken.
In the class, Brinkley taught us how to properly throw a disc and many different techniques when approaching the basket. The class also was a good class to keep students in shape, as the 18 holes are located on a hilly couple of acres that can be almost like a nature hike. There are many different styles and approaches to throw the disc that we learned in the class to help make our overall game better. I learned a lot and gained a new hobby I never knew existed until taking the class.
The class provided each student a disc so students could play outside of class. The two styles of disc are a driver and a putter, which is very similar to golf. The class also provided students the option to be competitive or play for practice, which I also found to be lots of fun. I chose to be competitive after a few practice days. It made me learn a lot about myself, as throwing the disc can be much more difficult when trees are around.
My classmate and friend Kade Pearson, a senior Marketing manager, said, “This would be much easier on flat ground without the trees and turns.” I agreed with him, but the trees and hills made it more fun in the long run.
By the end of the semester, I was throwing a disc like I had been doing it for a year, and I feel as though I learned a lot from Brinkley. I am thankful for UT Martin for giving students the opportunities to learn new healthy hobbies.
Editor’s note: Disc Golf is not a regularly occurring course at UT Martin.
