UTM’s College of Business and Global Affairs hosted a Career Day on Wednesday, October 29.
The event was open to all students with a major within the college. Students in attendance were able to attend workshops and presentations to help them prepare for the job application and interview process that are essential to landing a dream job. Students and faculty who pre-registered also attended a luncheon in the University Center at noon.
During the morning sessions in Watkins Auditorium and the UC Ballroom, students learned how to differentiate themselves from fellow applicants. Personality, experience, and style are all essential for potential job applicants to set themselves apart. Presentations and workshop sessions covered several essential topics, such as ‘How to Negotiate a Salary,’ ‘Professional Attire for the Business Interview’ and ‘Walking the Walk and Talking the Talk,’ among others.
Many faculty members encouraged their students to attend the events by offering extra credit for session attendance or completing a pop quiz for certain required sessions.
During the afternoon sessions in the Business Administration building, students attended workshops focused on preparing and perfecting their resumes, proper business attire, and international experiences. Other topics included proper resume preparation, common resume mistakes and common interview attire mistakes.
During the entirety of the day, three points were emphasized repeatedly during each session: be unique, communicate efficiently, and dress professionally.
Students in need of assistance writing resumes or cover letters may visit the Writing Center in the Humanities Building for help from faculty and other students.
