On Aug. 22, outside the new City of Martin public library, a special event was put on to help incoming freshmen and returning students get more acclimated to many of the local businesses that call Martin home.
In past years, this was usually just included in the Organization Fair that takes place on UT Martin’s campus that helps educate students on the various organizations and clubs at UT Martin. However, the city decided that this year they would split it into two events and have the City of Martin Fair the same day the school started its fall semester.
The event included numerous local businesses and organizations, food trucks and assorted yard games. The companies that attended the fair include Vantage Coffee Roasters, First Citizens National Bank, Eye Care Center of Martin, West Tennessee Healthcare – Rehab Hospital at Cane Creek, The Weakley County Prevention Coalition, the Tennessee Army National Guard, Skyhawk Battalion, The Carl Perkins Center, the 2022 Northwest Tennessee local food guide and the City itself even had their own table set up.
The City of Martin also provided a snow cone food truck among the others that were there, such as Perry’s BBQ and The Fixx – Breakfast and Burger Company.
When asked about the event, Amber Whitten, regional president of the Carl Perkins Center, said, “The fair is a great way for freshmen that aren’t from northwest Tennessee to get familiar with the community and the wide variety of businesses that we have here in Martin!”
It wasn’t just freshmen that were enjoying the fair though. Level Two nursing intern and senior at UT Martin Harrison Cook said, “I’m impressed and inspired by the way the city and these local businesses were able to come together and do something special for the new and returning incoming students, as someone who isn’t from Martin this definitely helped me feel like I was back home.”
