On Saturday, October 8, 2011, Meagan Meketi, Chi Omega representative, was crowned Homecoming queen. As she was crowned, her Chi Omega sisters erupted with applause. Meketi said that the main reason that she wanted to be queen was for Chi Omega.
“I ran for homecoming because I was nominated for it. I am Mrs. UTM, actually; so I guess they figured a lot of people knew me, but this is for Chi Omega. That’s who I was representing and that’s who this is for,” Meketi said.
When asked about her feelings about being Homecoming queen, Meketi expressed gratitude, yet concern for the other candidates.
“It’s really exciting. I wish we all could have gotten crowned, though, because I know how hard everybody worked for this. It is very hard; it’s a lot of work, and it goes out to Lyndsey Wolfe too, because I wish we could have shared it. I really do, because we both worked really hard. And so did the other candidates,” Meketi said.
Meketi also said that unity is a key element of Homecoming.
“It’s about being together. My family came and I know a lot of alumni come back, so it’s really nice to get to represent that and it’s a fun day [and] a beautiful day,” Meketi said.
Not only was this a success for Meketi and her Chi Omega sisters, but through this experience, she has learned life lessons.
“Really, this is a really big character building experience, because when your face is out there, people are going to notice, and some things are going to be positive, and some are going to be negative, and you just really learn how to handle situations like that a lot better, and you handle it with humility; that’s what you do,” Meketi said.
