Warren Carmichael, retired CEO of Three Rivers Health, spoke Nov. 6 at the annual College of Business and Global Affairs (CBGA) Career Day luncheon held in the UC Ballroom.
Dr. Katherine High, interim dean of the CBGA, welcomed the faculty and students and introduced Carmichael, who urged students in his speech to start looking for jobs early.
Carmichael said students should start looking for experiences while enrolled at UTM and not to wait until their senior year of college to begin their searches.
“UT Martin has extensive resources that give you guidance in the process, but you need to start early,” Carmichael said.
He also asked the students to take time to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses.
“There are people who are highly social and sort of fit into a sales role or a public relations role or other folks that are more technically oriented… I frankly felt like I fell in the latter category.”
He encouraged students to take advantage of the aptitude tests and to think about what they like to do as a career goal. Carmichael also emphasized the importance of extracurricular activities.
“Employers certainly are looking for people that have not only advertise and make good grades, but who take part in these extracurricular activities and it could show where you had the leadership roles that can help you,” he said.
Carmichael graduated from UTM in 1972 and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. He completed an internship during his senior year with Deloitte Haskins in Memphis and transitioned to his first job after graduation.
The Carmichaels donated a gift to the CBGA that formed the annual Career Day, which is held each fall.
