The UTM Office of Housing, the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Division of Student Affairs are hosting a collaborative food drive, called Donation Day, in the UC Feb. 15.
The mission is to combat food insecurities for UTM students. Along with the donations to Captain’s Pantry, students will be able to donate meals and or purchase discounted meals from Sodexo for $5 through SGA’s Skyhawk meal share program.
Food insecurity is an issue on many college campuses including UTM. The concept of Captain’s Pantry first started as a grassroots effort in Ellington Hall when residents began stocking a shelf in the lobby with nonperishable canned goods to share with other residents.
Since then, Captain’s Pantry has become a unified effort on campus to assist those with food insecurities.
Even though the pantries are located in the residence halls, Captain’s Pantry is open to all students. The two locations in Ellington Hall and Cooper Hall are open 8 a.m.- 11 p.m. daily.
The food drive is asking for nonperishable meal items such as canned beans, canned chicken, canned fish (tuna and salmon), cooking oils (olive and canola), crackers, whole grain cereal, granola bars, instant mashed potatoes, pasta, rice, soup, stew and chili.
Food donations can be made in the UC Feb. 15 and all other donations can be dropped off at the Ellington Hall desk.
To request meals through the Skyhawk Meal Share program, visit https://orgsync.com/848/forms/252396 to fill out the application. Food donated on Feb. 15 can be found in Captain’s Pantry.
