The fifth-annual Captain’s Challenge, hosted on April 3, raised $319,384 in just 24 hours for programs and scholarships at UTM.
The Captain’s Challenge is an annual fundraising event in which UTM attempts to raise $300,000 in 24 hours and is hosted by the Undergraduate Alumni Council (UAC).
Previously, Captain’s Challenge was hosted during “I Heart UTM” week and was a five-day event.
However, in 2018 Captain’s Challenge was separated from “I Heart UTM” week and made into a one-day event.
In 2018, the $300,000 goal was exceeded by $12,950.
Emma Bruner, president of the UAC and a senior Communications major from South Fulton, said, “I am very proud of the success of the Captain’s Challenge. This was the fifth year for the challenge, and our donors continue to amaze us. We are so thankful to everyone who contributes during this event.”
Contributors were able to direct their gifts to any department, office, scholarship fund, program, athletic unit or other activity and their gift was matched up to $300 while match funds were available.
Matching gift donors are alumni or friends of UTM that have chosen to give matching dollars. These matching dollars increase one person’s contribution on their chosen fund.
This year, matching donors were given to specific colleges, on-campus projects and athletics.
There was also a special request for contributors to consider the Chancellor’s Academic Excellence Fund. This scholarship fund is used to attract excelling students who might otherwise accept offers from other institutions.
