The first trailer for Captain Marvel debuted to much anticipation from fans of the Marvel franchise.
The trailer showed many ideas that a Marvel fan knows about. However, it also included references to when the film will be taking place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s (MCU) timeline.
The trailer opened with Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) falling out of the sky into a Blockbuster Video. This opening shot established the setting of the film being the 90s. The trailer also revealed the first looks of Samuel L. Jackson as young Nick Fury.
Throughout the trailer, Jackson’s voice was heard being narration as an attempt to establish a familiar voice to a new concept.
Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige stated in interviews that Captain Marvel will be the most powerful character in the universe, and the trailer showed this fact. Near the end of the trailer, she absorbed energy as if she was about to use it as a weapon.
It showed quick shots of some of the Kree aliens. The Kree were introduced in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014 and will feature prominently in this film as allies to Captain Marvel.
The trailer gave the audience a quick image of Jude Law as Mahr-Vell, in the comics the original Captain Marvel.
It also gave us a very brief shot of the main antagonist Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), the leader of the Skrull invasion on Earth. This will be the Skrulls’ first appearance in any MCU film as the majority of the Skrull race are currently owned by 20th Century Fox.
Overall, this was a great trailer to establish what exactly this film will be. It also earned wide recognition by being the 11th most viewed trailer in a 24-hour time period.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Jude Law, Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Mendelsohn, and will be released on March 8, 2019.
