Bethany Scott, a senior Education major at UTM, was recently diagnosed with stage three ovarian cancer.
Scott has received one round of chemo and has five more treatments to receive at Methodist Le Bonheur Hospital in Germantown, Tenn. During each round of treatment, Scott receives four different types of chemotherapy, which is the strongest type for ovarian cancer.
She receives chemotherapy for 18 hours a day consistently for five days and then is able to return home to rest for two weeks, before repeating the process.
Scott has been known to light up a room with her smile and always has a positive attitude. When Scott was diagnosed, it took everyone who knew her by surprise. It is hard to comprehend that a college student has to face something so terrible.
It is a great thing that Scott chose to attend college at UTM, because the students and faculty are supportive and willing to help anyone in need.
On Nov. 3, a group of UTM alumni sponsored a chili tailgate dinner to benefit Scott during the UTM vs. Jacksonville State football game. It is amazing to watch as the faculty and staff pull together to help Scott fight her battle.
The UTM Greek community is also coming together to support Bethany Scott and her family. Scott is a member of Alpha Omicron Pi Fraternity and has always loved being involved on campus. The ladies of AOPi are selling “Team Bethany” bracelets and “I wear teal for Bethany” T-shirts in the Boling University Center on Nov. 5 through Nov. 16.
The gentlemen of Kappa Alpha Order are selling teal and white paper links in the University Center as well. The ladies of Sigma Alpha are selling cow-shaped pieces of paper in Brehm Hall in order to construct an ovarian cancer ribbon.
The Greek Community is also hosting a chili dinner to benefit Bethany Scott. The dinner will be held in the UC Ballroom on Nov. 28 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased in the UC or from any member of AOPi. All proceeds from these events will benefit Bethany Scott as she battles ovarian cancer.
There are many other events for Scott in Martin and Dresden, so keep a look out, because volunteers are always needed. Please join the efforts of the UTM community in supporting Bethany Scott and her family.
