There’s only one place you could beat on a car until it was totally destroyed for a good cause, the Cancer Car Bash at The Tennessee Soybean Festival, held Aug. 28-Aug.30.
“A couple years ago two brothers paid the ten dollars to do ten minutes. They grabbed our biggest sledgehammer and they took turns until they knocked the bumper off completely,” said Ann Gather, a worker at the event.
The Cancer Car Bash is an event used to raise money for cancer research. Every year a different type of cancer is endorsed. This year they endorsed Bladder Cancer.
You pay to smash a car with a sledgehammer and you can also purchase t-shirts. For five minutes of swings and a t-shirt, it’s only ten dollars, or for a dollar you get five swings.
Participants are required to wear safety glasses and are instructed to not aim at the tires because the sledgehammer will bounce back and harm you. Also the windows on the car are removed for safety reasons.
“My mother passed away from ovarian cancer. So, I’m big on helping out with anything that has to do with cancer research. This is my second year helping and I absolutely enjoy it,”said Lisa Kruger, a volunteer worker.
Harper Lynn owner of Harper’s wrecker service has donated the car for the Cancer Car Bash for the last six years.
Lynn’s dad died in 2o07 of cancer. So, he decided to get involved with the Cancer Car Bash and raise money for the cause, which helps with research, because he felt there wasn’t enough information out there and still isn’t.
Once the Cancer Car Bash began it became a big hit and it continues to raise awareness and money.
“The Tennessee Soybean Festival may be over, but the Cancer Car Bash is still raising money from Pre-sales. We probably won’t have our final numbers in for another week, which is a good thing for us,” said Lynn.
