Many people, can agree that there is nothing better than relaxing at home with some good food and watching a silly rom-com, especially those made in the ’80s to early ’00s.
So here is my question: Why are we not making these kinds of movies anymore?
When you look at the landscape of modern movies and modern media in general, you can see a twist in how movies are made. Gone are the days of cheesy, silly and stupid films. They have been trashed for more serious, sophisticated and frankly boring films.
You see, we have gotten to the point in our evolution that we have decided that only certain kinds of people can make decisions. Film bros whose Letterboxd is filled with nothing but the most unknown and far out movies that no one has heard of. These are the people who make a big noise when something changes in Star Wars or Dune or if you even think about having a good movie with non-male leads.
While I will admit, rom-coms never really were big box office hits, they still brought in crowds. They are a guilty pleasure that many people are happy to speak about now. You have movies like When Harry Met Sally, Can’t Buy Me Love, Clueless, How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days, Bridget Jones Diary and many many others which shaped the landscape of modern pop culture.
Some people say a big reason why they don’t make these films anymore is because of how Gen Z see relationships. They see that some Gen Z women are taking the ‘I do not need a man’ route and think that they would hate the movies.
Um, actually, it’s the complete opposite.
The women they are talking about are the ones that also read every romance book and watch rom-coms basically every day because they want a relationship like that. It’s prevalent anytime you look at these people’s social media. Rom-coms are a dying art. There have been a few good ones in the past couple of years, like Set It Up, Something From Tiffany’s and Anyone but You. These bring back the original format of the rom-coms we all know and love. So please, bring back the silly, cliche and most of the time unrealistic rom-coms because we need it now more than ever.
