This month the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Black Student Association (BSA) will be hosting several events designed to commemorate Black History Month.
UTM’s 19th annual Civil Rights Conference, “Toward a Radical Revolution of Values” will be held in the University Center between Feb. 18-22.
A brief schedule of events for the conference has been released by the BSA as well as the promotional materials.
The “Black History Month Celebration” will be hosted Thursday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. in the Gateway Center at 701 Lindell St. in Martin. Guest speaker Dr. Frank Black will address the community and a light lunch will follow. For more information regarding the event, the Gateway Center can be reached at 731-587-3900.
Later that day, BSA will host “A Mile in My Shoes” which is a panel discussion addressing black students’ experiences. The panel will be held in the University Center at 5 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers, room 111.
A Silent Disco will also be hosted as a salute to black influence on music on Friday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Student Life Center.
“My Hair Is”, will be a discussion on the evolution of black hair on Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 6 p.m. in the UC, room 206 ABC.
SGA will host the “Black Experience in the Classroom” forum Tuesday, Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. in Watkins Auditorium. The open panel discussion will evaluate how a Predominately White Institution, such as UTM, affects African American students in the classroom. The panel style discussion will be used to generate intellectual dialog for the Civil Rights Conference. An educational program about “Black Love” will be held Thursday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. in the Legislative Chambers, UC room 111.
A hip-hop expo will be held Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. College artists and musicians will be showcasing their talents in a mini-concert, which will end as a party.
A Black History Game Show will take place Wednesday, Feb. 27 in the University Center, room 111 at 6 p.m. with $200 in prizes.
