After snapping Belmont’s eight-game winning streak yesterday, the Skyhawks weren’t able to carry their momentum into game three and lost to the Bruins 11-2.
Belmont (23-7, 10-2 OVC) struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. A homerun from outfielder Drew Turner would bring home infielder Matt Beaty to give the Bruins the early 2-0 advantage.
After a scoreless fifth, Belmont would come out at the top of the sixth, putting down the Skyhawks (9-22, 2-13 OVC). After five runs, including a homer from infielder Judah Akers, the Bruins held a 7-0 lead.
The Skyhawks finally got things going in the bottom of the seventh with three hits and two runs, the first by outfielder Brent Morris and the second by infielder Matt Haynes. This would turn out to be the only spark that the team would find all afternoon.
Belmont added two more runs in the eighth and then another two in the ninth as they closed out their win.
The Skyhawks sent out six different pitchers in attempts to slow the Bruins. Of those, Dalton Potts led the bunch with six strikeouts and a 6.23 ERA. The downside, however, is that Potts allowed seven hits and six runs. The other five pitchers combined for two strikeouts and allowed eight hits and five runs.
No players had more than one hit for the Skyhawks. In contrast, Belmont totaled 15 hits.
The Skyhawks have won 9 out of 22 games of the season and 2 out of 13 in the OVC. Their five-game road trip begins April 9, when they travel to No. 2 Vanderbilt to take on the Commodores. After that, they will face Eastern Kentucky in a three-game series, followed by a matchup at Southern Illinois. To keep up with the game, follow The Pacer on Facebook and @ThePacer on Twitter.
