The Epsilon Iota chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota at UTM is hosting a Penny War in the Fine Arts Building to raise money for local and national philanthropies.
This event will be hosted during the 39th Annual Honor Band Festival, which brings in high middle school and high school band students from all over the state to play in concerts on campus with guest directors.
Honor band serves to allow top students opportunities to play with other instrumentalists of their caliber outside of their normal ensemble.
The Penny War consists of a “competition” between four different sections: brass instrumentalists, woodwind instrumentalists, vocalists and a combined section of percussionists and strings. The goal of the competition is to have the most pennies in your section’s bucket.
Negative points are given for silver coins or dollar bills in any bucket. So in addition to putting pennies in your own team’s bucket, many students may put negative values in opposing teams’. This event’s proceeds will go to SAI Philanthropies, Inc.
Some of those philanthropies work to provide sheet music for blind musicians, creative resorts for musicians and provide music devices for dementia patients.
Sigma Alpha Iota- Epsilon Iota also does individual chapter fundraisers throughout the year to help support local music programs, but the national scale has a need for funds too.
Any donations to SAI Philanthropies, Inc. can be donated to the sisters of Epsilon Iota throughout the year, regardless of ongoing fundraisers.
The buckets will be located in the Fine Arts Building at the Quad-side entrance to the building.
The table will run through tomorrow at 7 p.m.
