Winter break hoops recap

Men win over Presbyterian College (73-70)
The UTM men’s basketball team started the winter break off with an impressive comeback victory over Presbyterian College at Templeton Center. The Skyhawks fought hard, and in the end, concluded the game on a 23-10 run and scored 12 three-pointers for the second time this season. Three Skyhawks broke double digits, led by Mike Liabo with a 20-point game high. At one point, the senior scored five 3-pointers in 4 minutes, 31 seconds. Terence Smith scored a close 19 points with five assists and Marshun Newell tied a career-high of 18 points, which included five straight points in the final 2 minutes.

Women lose to Ohio State (82-60)
The UTM women’s basketball team had a tough time with Ohio State’s offense. Heather Butler led the way for the Skyhawk team with 13 points. With that, she moved into a tie for fourth place on the OVC all-time scoring list with 2,324 career points. Katie Schubert put up 12 points, with four 3-pointers. Chelsea Roberts tossed in 8 points and also took the team-high of seven rebounds.

Men lose to Arkansas (102-52)
Junior guard Terence Smith took in a game-high 19 points, but the team still fell hard to the Arkansas Razorbacks.

Women lose to Illinois (77-62)
Heather Butler scored a game-high 29 points, shooting nearly 50 percent from the field, while Ashia Jones scored 9 points and had a game-high eight rebounds.

Men lose to Southeastern Louisiana (80-76)
Junior forward Myles Taylor recorded a career-high 34 points while also tying a career high with 11 field goals made in 22 attempts and sinking 12 of his 14 free-throw attempts. This was Taylor’s second of the season and 12th in his career. Terence Smith also broke double digits with 12 points and also tied his career high with seven assists.

Women win over Southern Illinois (85-55)
Thirty-six forced turnovers marked a season high and the most in the Kevin McMillan era. Forty-eight points were scored off turnovers, including 16 in transition. Offensively, four players broke double figures while seven players scored 7 points or more. Ashia Jones brought in a career-high 17 points and a game-high five steals. Heather Butler, Elizabeth Masengil and Jasmine Newsome also broke double digits with Butler scoring 15 points, and Masengil and Newsome each scoring 12. This performance moved Newsome into ninth on the Ohio Valley Conference all-time scoring list with 2,181 career points.

Women lose to Florida State (76-53)
Heather Butler led the Skyhawks with 16 points, all of which came in the second half. Chelsea Roberts also broke double figures with 10 points in the game. Although the team had a rough first half, they ended up forcing 12 turnovers and playing an even 33-33 score in the second half.

Women win against Jacksonville State (88-75)
The Skyhawks opened the Ohio Valley Conference play with a victory over OVC East foe Jacksonville State at Pete Mathews Coliseum. The team forced 24 turnovers with 24 points coming from turnovers. The Skyhawks also set a season high at 18 steals. Jasmine Newsome took the game-high with 25 points while also getting 11 assists and 5 steals. Heather Butler scored 14 points, and Tiara Caldwell tied a career-high of 13 points. The Skyhawks placed all 10 players in the scoring column, with six scoring 5 or more points.

Men lose to Jacksonville State (70-65)
UTM led for the majority of the game but could not hold the Gamecocks for the OVC opener in Jacksonville. Marshun Newell recorded the team-high for the third time this season, and a career best at 21 points. Terence Smith tallied 14 points and team-highs with seven rebounds and four assists. Myles Taylor also broke double-digits for 12 points.

Men lose to Austin Peay (81-68)
Although having four players in double-figures, the team could not come back from this early lead. Myles Taylor recorded the game-high at 19 points, tying a career high with 14 rebounds. This marked Taylor’s 13th career double-double. Justin Childs put up 14 points while Terence Smith and Dee Oldham broke double-digits for 11 and 10 points, respectively. Marshun Newell also set a career high with seven assists.

Women win against Murray State (88-87)
It was a fight to the end with 18 lead changes during the course of the game with three players scoring over 20 points against OVC rival Murray State. Butler scored an impressive 33 points, which extended her career-long streak of 112 straight games in double figures. This streak ranks 21st in the NCAA record book. Newsome also brought in 24 points, while Aisha Jones tallied 20 points and 10 rebounds bringing in her first career double-double.

Men lose to Murray State (91-77)
Terence Smith led the team with 19 points in addition to having a team-high of four assists. Marshun Newell scored double-digits for the 12th time this season with 17 points. Myles Taylor brought in 15 points and a team-best of seven rebounds. Justin Childs added 10 points on a perfect performance.
