The person who killed two people at an Athens, Tennessee factory on Thursday was found dead in a bathroom.
On Thursday September 22nd at 4 p.m. a lone gunman entered the Thomas & Betts facility, roughly 60 miles north east of Chattanooga, and killed two people. Police later found the attacker’s body in a bathroom, with what appeared to be self-inflicted gun wounds.
Athens police chief Charles Ziegler says the weapon appears to be a semi-automatic pistol. The male suspect was a factory worker, but police say it is unclear whether the man knew his victims or what caused him to shoot.
McMinn county schools had been dismissed by the time the 4 p.m. call came in to police; however, sports teams on campus were taken indoors and placed on lockdown. The school was under no immediate threat and once the facility was secured, students were permitted to go home.
The shooter’s and victims’ identities are still unknown but the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the Athens police department have the crime scene under investigation.
