April 1 of every year becomes a day of mischievous behavior, pranks, hoaxes and trickery.
I imagine many of us have had dreams of pulling the ultimate prank. When I was in high school, I felt it was my duty as class president to perform the greatest class prank in my school’s history. With only a month and a half of school left, what did we have to lose? Right?
The day before April Fool’s Day, our work began. We had successfully plotted to leave our teacher’s classroom door propped open when leaving school earlier that day. Now that I think about it, plan B was breaking in a window, and in retrospect, I am really glad it didn’t come to that. I mean, that is just straight-up criminal.
So anyway, a door was propped open and we sneaked inside the school. The school was so dark and quiet, completely opposite of a normal school day. I think this is the moment all of us felt the rush of adrenaline. Hundreds of Dixie cups were loaded on our backs. Using the bathrooms and water fountains, we worked like a well-oiled machine, filling the small cups halfway with water and neatly lining them one by one in the hallway.
As we finished, we took one last glance at our achievement. And, yes, what an achievement it was. Hundreds of small Dixie cups filled the school’s halls, all the way to the lobby. There was no floor space to be seen. Every inch was covered with cups. It was absolutely EPIC.
The next morning was the only time in my high school career that I was actually excited to get to school.
I will spare the lame details about how he [our teacher] figured out it was us and we spent a long morning cleaning up our prank while getting yelled at by our teachers and coaches. That is not what’s important anyway. What is important is that our class will forever have that memory.
On this April Fool’s Day, I invite my fellow students to enjoy it. Make someone laugh. There are thousands of harmless pranks online, so have some fun. But watch your backs!
