Competition was fierce during Phi Mu Alpha’s 2013 All-Sing competition, and Alpha Omicron Pi won both overall and in their division.
Three sororities and one fraternity competed in this year’s competition. Alpha Omicron Pi and Zeta Tau Alpha competed in the Sorority division while Chi Omega performed with Alpha Gamma Rho in the Mixed Greek division. Sigma Alpha Iota, a women’s professional music fraternity, performed as well, but did not compete.
The theme of this year’s competition was “Songs of the ’90s When We Were Young.” Each group performed renditions of popular 1990ssongs. The groups all performed different songs and allowed the audience to reminisce in various ways.
“I like that we get to be a part of All-Sing, because we get to showcase our talents and what we are all about, letting us spread our love for music to people on campus and in the community,” Sigma Alpha Iota member Savannah Lee said.
AOPi opened the event with its version of “MMMBop” by Hanson. The women performed a variety of pop and country songs, including “Earl Had To Die” by the Dixie Chicks. With their performance, the women were able to secure their spot at the top of the competition.
ZTA reminded the audience what love was like in the 1990s through songs such as “Crazy” by Brittney Spears, “Ready To Run” by Dixie Chicks and “Wanna Be” by Spice Girls.
The women of ZTA also knew they couldn’t complete a 1990s set without including at least one song from The Backstreet Boys, so they chose “I Want It That Way.”
Chi O and AGR ended the competition portion of the performance with songs such as “One Week” by the Bare Naked Ladies and “AchyBreaky Heart” by Billy Ray Cyrus.
Their performance included a mix of genres while telling a story.
Early into the performance, the men and women were divided into couples and, as the songs progressed, the story went from the couples breaking up to the women deciding they were survivors. To end their routine, the group performed “The Sign” by Ace of Base.
While the judges were tallying the scores, Sigma Alpha Iota, UTM’swomen’s music fraternity, entertained the audience with their own musical performance, titled “Oops, We Did It Again.” The women performed several songs from the 1990s including the theme songs from popular TV shows such as “Friends,” “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”and “Sister, Sister. “ They also performed songs such as “This Is How We Do It” by Montell Jordan.
The ladies of SAI truly remembered the 1990s with their costumes and choreography throughout their entire performance.
After the scores were tallied, the trophies were given out. AOPireceived first in their division as well as overall.
“Although we did have frustrating nights where it seemed we would never get it right, in the end all of the hard work and frustration paid off. The win was for sure worth it all, and I had a wonderful time performing for AOPi, “ said Madison Scott, member of AOPi.
ZTA received second in their division and third overall. Chi-O andAGR placed first in the Mixed Greek Division and second overall.
