For campus organizations looking for service opportunities, the Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs will be hosting its third annual Day of Service on Saturday, Jan. 19.
The organizers of the event characterize it as “an opportunity to turn what is normally a day off work/school into a day of service in honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” It will feature three service events and a lunch provided for the volunteers by a collection of campus-affiliated church organizations.
The first event of the day will be a Recycling Barn cleanup from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Volunteers will assist in sorting recyclables at the on-campus facility and a general cleanup. This will be followed by a letter-writing event from 11 a.m.-noon to write “thank you” letters to UTM faculty and staff. The letter-writing event will be held in the UC Ballroom.
A lunch provided by the Campus Ministerial Alliance, Wesley Foundation, Baptist Collegiate Ministry, Skyhawk Association and Church of Christ Student Center will be served from noon-1 p.m. in the UC Ballroom. The lunch is open to all students participating in at least one of the service events.
The final event of the day will be from 2-4 p.m. at Greenbriar Meadows, an assisted-living facility near campus. Volunteers will be playing bingo with the senior residents.
If any organization is interested in participating in the Day of Service, information can be found on the OrgSync page of the Office of Student Life and Multicultural Affairs. If any organization is planning on signing up for the service day, each participating member must sign up individually by Jan. 16 at 11:59 p.m.
Community service hours will be logged by the office, so all participants need to do is sign up and participate.
