The 70th Emmy Awards took place on Monday, Sept. 17, focusing on diversity as the main theme of the night.
In all of the presenters’ and hosts’ openings, they spoke heavily about how diverse all the nominees were.
However, when looking at the winners, a majority of them were Caucasian.
Though this was the case, Regina King and Thandie Newton proved to be the outliers as the only African American actors to win acting awards.
This was especially a great night for Henry Winkler, as he won his first ever Emmy.
He won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry.
Winkler was previously nominated three times for his portrayal as Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, once for an informational program and once for his guest appearance on The Practice.
Winkler began his acceptance speech quoting Skip Brittenham, “Can I just say Skip Brittenham said to me a long time ago, ‘If you stay at the table long enough, the chips come to you,’ and tonight I got to clear the table.”
He ended his speech with a message to his adult kids saying, “Jed, Zoe and Max, you can go to bed now. Daddy won!”
The event was not without surprises though.
During Glenn Weiss’ acceptance speech for the award for Directing for a Variety Special, he spoke about how proud his mother would be.
This led to him talking about how important it was for keeping a person’s sunshine close to them. Weiss said to his girlfriend Jan, “You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I wanna call you my wife.”
Without hesitation, she said yes before he could formally ask. The surprise proposal of the evening ended in a kiss.
The couple has been together for six years and though this was not Weiss’ first Emmy, in fact, he has previously won 11 Emmy awards; this was his first major public proposal.
At the end of the night, the two big winners, other than the happy couple, were Amazon Original The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, taking home the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series. Followed by the ultra-popular series Game of Thrones , which took home the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel won a total of five Emmy’s, also winning Outstanding Supporting Actress, Lead Actress and Writing and Directing in a Comedy Series.
The Pacer has previously reviewed the 14 time Emmy nominated Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and the second season of the show is expected to be released on Amazon for streaming this winter.
