An update on the Russian and Ukrainian War

As we all have read, on February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine.

Over the years, it has been quite known that people under 30 or even under 35 do not get their news from news stations like CNN or FOX News. Many get their news from social media. So, with that information, I found it important that I write a brief overview of what has occurred in this region for better understanding. It has been noticed that these stories about Russia and Ukraine continue on TV stations, but not so much on social media. So, this is where this quick overview comes in.

In the weeks prior to the invasion, Russia amassed over 190,000 soldiers along Ukraine’s borders from Belarus all the way to Crimea. The Donbas region, the Donetsk’s People’s Republic and Luhansk People’s Republic requested Russian assistance in the wake of renewed hostilities. Russia announced that it was conducting a special military operation in Ukraine to “De-nazify” the country while simultaneously launching offenses in multiple areas in Ukraine.

Sanctions are continuing to flow out from most of the European Union, North Atlantic Treaty Organization and their pacific allies. Some of these sanctions targeted the Russian Energy Sector, Russian oligarchs and the overall Russian economy. A lot of companies have suspended their operations in Russia or have completely withdrawn from the country. Over 30 countries have placed sanctions on Russia since the invasion started. A lot of the same countries that have sanctioned Russia are supplying Ukraine with lethal military aid. Russia was voted off the Human Rights Council, and numerous countries have expelled Russian diplomats and suspected agents.

Russia stalled right outside of Kyiv and took several large cities. In late March, they pulled out of these areas and then refocused on completely liberating Donbas. On April 11, according to Yahoo News, “’Russian forces are reinforcing around the Donbas, notably near the town of Izyum, but have not yet launched an offensive to seize control of the disputed region of eastern Ukraine,’ Pentagon officials said Monday.”
