College is hard enough between trying to get a quality education, have a social life and get enough sleep. Can you imagine staring out with a disability to have to overcome first then tackle the monster that is the college life style?
As a campus that states that its policy is to provide reasonable accommodations to assist students with disabilities in negotiating the university system is the University doing a good enough job. Does the University of Tennessee at Martin accommodate to the needs of those who have either a physical or mental disability.
There are many attributes that make a campus accessible for students with disability. One that I want to point out is the Office of disability Services that is part of the Student Services and Success Mentoring Center. They establish rules that benefit not only those with a handicap but also the other students on campus.
One of the services that they have made acceptable is the use of service animals on university grounds. There are restrictions to where the animals are allowed to go. Anywhere that might cause harm to the animal is restricted as a safety precaution for the animal this would be labs or classrooms with sharp objects near or on the floor. Though a laboratory director may open his or her lab to the use of service animals on a case-by-case basis.
Another way UTM is accommodating is that there are elevators in every building for the use of those with a physical walking disability. Along with these there are wheel chair ramps outside for students to use to enter and exit the buildings. Though are these enough with students who are unwilling to walk four flights of stairs clogging up the elevators? If you see someone who needs the elevator more then you please make room for them so that they can get to class at a reasonable time.
