71st annual Directors Guild of America awards winners

The 71st annual ceremony of the Directors Guild of America (DGA) Awards was held Saturday, Feb. 2, honoring directors’ achievements.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by actress Aisha Tyler at the Hollywood and Highland Center in Los Angeles.

In the film categories, Alfonso Cuaron, director of the Netflix original Roma, won the award for Feature Film. Other nominees in this category include Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Peter Farrelly (Green Book), Spike Lee (BlacKKKlansman) and Adam McKay (Vice).

Ben Stiller won the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Movies for Television and Limited Series for his direction of Escape at Dannemora.

Also nominated in this same category in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, Tim Wardle won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Documentary award for his direction of Three Identical Strangers.

Winning two other awards for directing Eighth Grade, Bo Burnham took home a third in the category Outstanding Directorial Achievement – First-Time Feature Film.

In the television categories, Adam McKay won the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Dramatic Series for his direction of Succession, “Celebration”.

Bill Hader, director of the first episode in the HBO series Barry, took home the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Comedy Series.

Director of the Netflix original The Final Table, Russell Norman received the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Reality Programs.

The Grammy’s took home a DGA award when Louis J. Horvitz won the Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Variety/Talk/News/Sports-Specials for his direction of The 60th Grammy Awards.

Winning his fifth DGA award for directing Saturday Night Live, Don Roy King received the award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement – Variety/Talk/News/Sports-Regularly Scheduled Programming.

Although the Netflix original Television series A Series of Unfortunate Events had three directors nominated in the Children’s Programming category, director Jack Jameson of Sesame Street’s “When You Wish Upon a Pickle: A Sesame Street Special,” won the award.

In the Commercials category, Spike Jonze, director of Welcome Home, the commercial for the Apple Homepod, took home the award.

The final awards given at the ceremony included the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Achievement in Television Direction received by Don Mischer, the Frank Capra Achievement Award received by Kathleen McGill, the Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award received by Mimi Deaton, and the DGA Diversity Award received by FX Networks.
