25th annual Screen Actors Guild award winners

The 25th annual ceremony of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards was held on Sunday, Jan. 27, honoring outstanding performances in film and television.

This year’s ceremony was hosted by actress Megan Mullally at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium Expo Hall.

In the film, the cast of Black Panther took home two awards, one for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture and the other for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Rami Malek received Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Bohemian Rhapsody. The other nominees included Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), Viggo Mortensen (Green Book) and John David Washington (BlacKKKlansman).

Also a Golden Globe Award winner in this same category, Mahershala Ali (Green Book) took the award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role.

Glenn Close (The Wife) won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role. Nominees included Emily Blunt (Mary Poppins Returns), Olivia Colman (The Favourite), Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) and Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?).

Although she did not receive the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role, Emily Blunt received the award Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in A Quiet Place.

In television, the cast of This Is Us won the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series, while the cast of Glow won the award for Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, received three awards. The series took the awards for both Best Actor (Tony Shalhoub) and Actress (Rachel Brosnahan) in a Comedy Series. The cast also won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series.

Amazon Prime Video was host to another winner of the evening when Escape at Dannemora actress Patricia Arquette won the award Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries.

An unlikely star with an unusual start, Darren Criss won the award Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries for his performance in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, now available on Netflix. Criss got his start with the YouTube hit A Very Potter Musical and later was a regular character on the Fox hit show Glee.

Sandra Oh received the award Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her performance in Killing Eve, which is yet another show available to binge, with its showing on Hulu. Jason Bateman (Ozark) won the award Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series.

Alan Alda, an actor in the 1970s series M*A*S*H, won the Screen Actors Guild Lifetime Achievement Award. The award was presented by Bridge of Spies co-star Tom Hanks.

The evening concluded with the Post-Awards Gala, hosted by People for the 23rd year.
