“The end is near… I hope they remember you.” After 10 years of movie releases, the moment everyone has been waiting for is upon us: the collision of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Infinity War.
Infinity War will bring together every Marvel superhero to fight Thanos, the “Dark Lord,” and stop him from destroying the universe. The Guardians, the Avengers, Ant-Man, Black Panther with the Dora Milaje, the Winter Soldier, Spider-man, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange and many more will join forces to save the universe.
But some may not live long enough to see the outcome.
As the world awaits the upcoming premiere on April 27, many UTM students, like sophomore Adam Jamerson are preparing for the movie by attempting to marathon every Marvel movie in chronological order. Jamerson, a devout Marvel fan, grew up reading the comics and remembers when they began making movies in 2008 about Iron Man.
“I was really excited to see it as it was the first of the franchise,” Jamerson says. “Iron Man isn’t even one of my favorite superheroes by far, but the movie was very good at the time.”
Jamerson says it’s the introduction of new characters that keeps him interested and excited for new movies. He has seen every Marvel movie produced in theaters except for Spider-man: Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, which he later saw. He tried once before to marathon all 15 at the time, but “ran out of snacks and could no longer stay awake.”
In 10 years, 18 Marvel movies have been produced with many more currently in the works. To watch all 18 in chronological order before Infinity War is released would take 38 hours and 17 minutes, just a little longer than a day and a half.
To watch the movies in chronological order, begin with Captain America: The First Avenger as it is set during World War II in 1942. Continue as following: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and 2, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Thor: Ragnarok, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther and finally, Avengers: Infinity War.
Each movie plays into the next, creating a cohesive timeline for fans to follow. Captain America: The First Avenger ends at the beginning of The Avengers, showing how Captain America is adjusting to civilian life 70 years in the future. Every movie plays off of the last, so events occurring during the last movie will be consequences in the next, such as the Sokovia Accords being debated in Captain America: Civil War from the Avengers destroying Sokovia in the movie before, Avengers: Age of Ultron. In the newest Marvel movie Black Panther, T’challa is facing becoming king of Wakanda after his father was killed in Civil War.
Kendall Howell, a senior, says Marvel has always been a big part of her life through her family. She even received a box of Marvel collector’s cards from her grandfather. Howell is looking forward to seeing Infinity War, especially after seeing Black Panther, but knows it will be the end of the line for many of her beloved characters.
“I’m expecting to cry a lot from ‘Infinity War’. I expect there to be some major characters killed off or tied up ends for them,” Howell said. “I attempted to marathon them all once The Avengers came out, but I haven’t done it since.” She plans to do so before Infinity War comes out.
Infinity War is expected to break box office records according to pro.boxoffice.com. It is expected to exceed $490 million – $590 million and break the record previously held by The Fate of the Furious at $541.9 million.
More Marvel movies to look out for in the future include Ant-Man and the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and a fourth Avengers film to be released in 2019.
Marvel has also released several series, such as Agents of Shield, Agent Carter, Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, The Defenders, The Punisher, Inhumans, Runaways and Cloak and Dagger.
Marvel has expanded into many different media of entertainment like comics, movies, TV shows and gaming, but they will all join forces together in Infinity War.
The world will be watching, sitting on the edge of their seats as the universe collides in the fight for all mankind.
